Eliteserien and NWSL Lead the Rate, Portugal Wins on Volume
A look at which competitions produced the most goals in the last day of action, from Norway's free-scoring top flight to Portugal's bulging Campeonato de Portugal card.
Six competitions, một scoreboard. Across the last day of matches, Eliteserien and NWSL both averaged 3.8 goals per game, the highest rate of the lot, though neither came close to matching the sheer bulk produced in Portugal.
The Campeonato de Portugal churned out 80 goals across 26 matches, a tally no other competition approached, working out to 3.1 per game. It is a case of volume over rate: more fixtures, more nets bulging, even if the average sat behind four of the other five leagues on this list.
The Rate Leaders
Eliteserien needed just six matches to produce 23 goals, a 3.8 average that puts it at the top of the per-game table. NWSL matched that figure exactly, with 19 goals from five matches. Both numbers come from small sample sizes, but on this particular day, nothing in world football was more clinical in front of goal.
Liga MX Apertura was not far behind, with 24 goals in seven matches for a 3.4 average, enough to edge out every competition bar the hai front-runners.
The Rest of the Pack
MLS matched Portugal's 3.1 goals per game, but from a much smaller slate: 37 goals in 12 matches. USL Championship brought up the rear of this group with 28 goals in 10 matches, a 2.8 average that was still enough for plenty of entertainment, just not quite at the pace set elsewhere.
- Campeonato de Portugal: 80 goals in 26 matches (3.1 per game)
- MLS: 37 goals in 12 matches (3.1 per game)
- USL Championship: 28 goals in 10 matches (2.8 per game)
- Liga MX Apertura: 24 goals in 7 matches (3.4 per game)
- Eliteserien: 23 goals in 6 matches (3.8 per game)
- NWSL: 19 goals in 5 matches (3.8 per game)
Taken together, the numbers suggest no single competition had a monopoly on entertainment. Portugal's depth of fixtures pushed its total goal count well clear of the field, while Norway and the NWSL showed that a shorter card can still deliver the highest strike rate of the day.
